If you have embraced your Second Amendment right to “keep and bare arms,” you should also be eager to keep these firearms safe. Whether you have small children or are simply a conscientious firearm owner, there are a variety of steps that you can take to increase safety in your home.
- Keep All Firearms Locked Up
Consider purchasing a gun safe or lock box to store your firearm while at home. Keeping your firearms out of sight and out of the hands of inexperienced individuals is your first step to gun safety. If there are children in your home, use common sense when storing firearms. Firearms should be stored in locations that are out of reach of small children. If weapons are being kept in locked cabinets or safes, be certain that children do not have access to the key or combination. - Keep Your Firearms Unloaded
All firearms should be unloaded prior to entering your home. Your weapon should only be loaded while in the field or at the range. Lock all ammunition away with the firearm. In some situations you may want to remove the firing pin from your weapon to add an additional layer of safety. - Treat All Firearms As If They Are Loaded
This piece of wisdom should be second nature to any individual handling a firearm. When picking up a weapon or receiving a weapon from another individual, you should always check to make sure the weapon is unloaded – even if you have just watched someone check the weapon. Always point your weapon in a “safe” direction, away from other people. Do not place your finger on the trigger until you are ready to fire your weapon. The safety feature of your firearm is not always safe. Safeties, like other mechanical devices, can malfunction. As such, you should never rely solely on the safety. Trigger locks are a cheap and effective way to enhance firearm safety in your home. - Consider Firearm Education
If you’re a new gun owner, consider firearm ownership classes to familiarize yourself with the responsibilities that come with owning a gun. You may also decide to train your children or others in the household in the proper handling of firearms. By ensuring that everyone in the household is aware of safe handling practices, you can hopefully prevent accidents from happening.
If you decide that gun ownership isn’t worth the hassle, rest assured that there are plenty of ways you can defend yourself and your family from attack without owning a gun. For example, consider a stun gun or pepper spray rather than a lethal weapon.
