Self-protection has been a part of the human condition since civilization began. For many today who do not want to invest in a lethal defense, such as a handgun for example, there are numerous non-lethal self-defense weapons on the market today. In addition, there is also physical training you can do in several martial arts and self-defense classes that also provide a non-lethal response to dangerous situations.
Methods
Karate, Tai-Kwon-Do, Judo, Ju-Jitsu, and more, there are a myriad of self-defense techniques that will help you react properly when attacked. The advantage is that you can defend yourself in situations when you have nothing else to use and provide you with the confidence of knowing what to do or at least how to react when the unexpected occurs.
The downside is that it takes years of training to master at least one of the disciplines and they usually require good dexterity and reflexes to work properly. Even the short training courses take time and that may not be good enough depending on the attacker.
Products
Most people tend to use non-lethal self-defense products that can be carried on their person and used quickly. Here is a sample of some of the more popular non-lethal weapons that can be used.
Pepper Spray: Quick, efficient, and powerful, pepper spray will stop any attacker in their tracks which allows you time to get away. The product comes in different sizes and can be used as a spray or a pepper gun which inundates the attacker with a pepper compound, causing pain and temporary blindness. The hottest and most potent pepper spray available today is made by fox labs.
Taser: The taser is an electronic device which fires like a handgun, putting two electrical wires into the attacker and shocking them into unconsciousness. While immobilized, you can get away and go for help. You will need distance to use the product and it’s not always effective, so be careful.
Stun Gun: Operates on a similar principle to the taser, except that you touch the attacker with the end of the weapon which generates an electric charge. This will immobilize the attacker when used properly and is arguably more effective than a taser. However, you will have to get up close and have the strength and dexterity to use it. Unlike pepper spray which allows you to deploy the spray at a safe distance from the attacker.
Tactical Flashlight: This is a flashlight that puts out at least 300 lumens which temporarily blinds an attacker. Plus, tactical flashlights are made from hardened aluminum or other lightweight metal and can be used to strike the assailant. Some will have a strobe light function which will disorient an attacker, but keep in mind that the time you buy to get away will be short. This weapon is most effective at night.
Other non-lethal weapons include the bean bag gun, which will knock the wind out of an attacker and is easy to use but is quite bulky. For protecting the home, a good alarm system or a well-trained dog provides good non-lethal protection.
Understanding the best non-lethal self-defense starts with you. Your abilities, attitude, and time-commitment to invest in a self-defense product or method will determine which one is right for your needs. Plus, you should also consider your budget and ability to maintain the product or method you choose along with the danger that you might face.
