Although you may feel as though your house is a fairly safe place, chances are probably pretty high that your property is not as safe as it could be. You may argue that you have a security alarm in place and while that is an excellent starting point for your home, it does not keep your entire property safe from intruders.
Whether you already have a home security alarm or not, it is a good idea to consider all of the elements that make up your property. Unless you live in an apartment complex, you probably have more than a few walls and a roof. Your property consists of your yard as well as any structures on it, such as a fence, swimming pool, shed, or carport. In order to determine whether your property is adequately protected, try asking yourself these questions:
- Is the exterior of the house well lit? Light makes an excellent deterrent when it comes to preventing criminals from vandalizing or breaking into a home. If the exterior of your home is well lit, particularly in the areas that criminals might use to get in, such as windows and doors, they suddenly find themselves at a much higher risk of being seen and getting caught in the act.
- Is your landscaping working against your property’s security? Sometimes the type of landscaping we choose can be counterproductive to our desires of home safety and security. Most of us have a need to utilize shrubbery, trees, and tall flowers as a means to gain a bit of privacy. Unfortunately, larger plants such as trees and bushes can provide just the right amount of cover for someone looking to break into your home or steal items from your property. If you have large plants near your house, consider pruning them or replacing them with thorny plants such as rose bushes.
- If you have a second story, can it be reached using nearby trees? What may simply be a nice shade tree to you can be seen by a criminal as the perfect means in which to get into your home. Many people fail to lock upstairs windows and balcony doors because they figure that there’s no way a criminal could get up to the second story without first having to gain access through the ground level. In reality, a tree in close proximity to the house could easily be scaled and used to enter your top story.
- If you have a fence, is it in good condition? Fencing is commonly used to keep children and animals inside the yard. It is also a great way to deter people from getting onto your property. If your fence is weak, missing planks, or has a hole in it, it is not longer able to be used as an effective safety feature. Make sure that any gates in the fence are securely locked. You may also want to consider placing security lighting near the fence so that criminals are unable to use it for camouflage.
So, now that you’ve given it some consideration, how does your property’s security look? Now that you are able to identify your property’s weaknesses, you can set a realistic goal to make your property and your home much more secure.
