Do you know what Red Hot Chili Peppers and our Pepper Sprays have in common? Well, that depends on whether you are talking about the band or actual “red hot chili peppers” right? We are just having a bit of fun with you of course, but did you know that the “heat” of pepper sprays really do come from an ingredient called capsaicin which is present in the hottest peppers people actually eat? They sure do!
Now before you start thinking you can just pick up some Tabasco at the store and sling it around as a multi purpose tool, you should know that some peppers are naturally not suitable for self defense. For example, a sweet bell pepper actually wouldn’t hurt a fly because it contains no capsaicin. Capsaicin is that ingredient which will bring a grown man to his knees if it’s hot enough. Sure some men might be able to ingest some pretty hot stuff but squirt it in his eyes and you have another story!
The measurement of this “hotness” is actually quoted in Scoville Heat Units (SHU) which is named after the American chemist Wilbur Scoville. Interesting right? Do you feel like your hot stuff in the knowledge department yet? Okay, perhaps not yet, but with a bit more information on peppers and their levels of capsaicin you will be armed (pun intended) with enough information to seriously impress your friends at the next Tex Mex dinner party!
Now, we’ve already established that a bell pepper has a big fat zero in the capsaicin department. Something like a green Tabasco sauce though might yield something between 600-800 SKU’s which may start your tongue tingling (depending) but ingesting a really spicy habanero Tabasco sauce in the range of 7,000-8,000 SKU may have your crying for your mommy.
Stop and think for a second about that time you chopped up some jalapeño’s, forgot to wash your hands and rubbed your eyes! Bam a Lam right? Well that was only in the neighborhood of 2,500-8,000 SHU. I hear you saying “Only?” Well yes, that wouldn’t come anywhere near pure Cayenne Pepper which can reach between 30,000-50,000 SKU or more exotic Thai Peppers in the 50,000-80,000 range! It does give you a comparison in the “hot” department for a jumping off point! So that jalapeño you rubbed in your eye was just a sting compared to much hotter peppers. Now that you have this frame of reference, let’s really blow your mind with a little trivia for your friends: Capsaicin in it’s purest form is between 15,000,000-16,000,000. Are you counting zeros? Yes that is 16 million SKU!
The US levels in our pepper sprays for defense are usually 2-5 million SKU. I’m sure you can agree that this means our pepper sprays are going to put a stop to whoever/whatever you spray them with and will cause the immediate slamming eyes, followed by temporary blindness and plenty of coughing, choking and nausea. This non lethal punishment is going to last anywhere from 25-45 minutes depending on the strength and that’s more than enough time for you to get away.
Naturally, we want nothing to ever happen to you in the way of an attack but assuming that it won’t would put you in a horrible position and there is absolutely no reason for this. Our pepper sprays are the lowest priced, most effective and super convenient! We even have keychain pepper sprays for those trips through the parking garage, dog repellent sprays for your jog or walk through the neighborhood and some pretty serious pepper spray guns!
